The Spark! A "Spark People" Book Giveaway
So I kept hearing the words "Spark People" floating around the web, and I knew it was a fitness website of some sort. I kept meaning to investigate, but I never got around to it.
And frankly, there was something that seemed vaguely amusing and possibly cultish about the name "Sparkpeople." I even got kind of a science-fictiony picture in my head: fit and cheerful aliens coming together to share tips. Live long and prosper, Sparkpeople!
I was thinking sort of like this, only maybe with
actual sparks coming out of their heads.

But, it turns out that Sparkpeople are not aliens. And their website is pretty cool! It has all kinds of tools and advice and a whole community of determined people who have helped each other lose over 9 million pounds, burn 7 billion calories and drink 218 million cups of water. (No word, however, as to how many million bathroom trips were logged in the course of drinking all that water.) And they have a blog called the Daily Spark that has some great info in it too.
Anyway, the three niftiest things about Sparkpeople, in my opinion?
1. Their website is free and has a hell of a lot of stuff on it;
2. They don't promote a particular diet or exercise plan but instead they "encourage small steps," and stress goal attainment, accountability, education, and community;
And, best of all:
3. They have a new book that just came and they're giving us 5 FREE COPIES for a giveaway!
The only thing I'm not 100% on board with? According to their website content editor, "most everything we promote is upbeat and optimistic."
Well, nobody's perfect.
So what's in the book?
I haven't read it yet, but it apparently it crams a lot of the best and most helpful stuff from the website in there, plus some inspiring success stories, and it includes a 28-day plan to change your life.
Oh, and it's got "27 proven secrets of success." And I am SUCH a sucker for lists like that, that if I do nothing else I'm going to at least have to get around to finding out what the 27 secrets are. I'm hoping to see "eat more chocolate" and "take more naps" on the list. You think?
And if you'd like to win a copy of the book (Sorry, U.S. residents only) please leave a comment below! Contest closes Sunday, January 3rd, midnight PST, and I'll announce the winners (chosen by random number generator) on Monday. Do check back to see if you've won and email me by Friday the 8th, or I'll pick some new winners!
Sounds like a great book.
This book will put me over the hump to reach my goals.
Hey, I'm on Sparkpeople! Or at least I was...I'd kinda forgotten about it during all this pregnancy mumbo jumbo. Guess I should add that to my gifts - get back on there! It's a great place.
Thanks for the chance to nab their book!
I love SparkPeople. It is a great place to visit for everything under the sun to do with health and fitness. Put my name in please.

SparkPeople (all happy happy joy joy) + Cranky Fitness (an oddly wonderful slap of reality) = the perfect fitness support balance
Each morning I read my Spark People emails and log my raa-raa goals for the day then I head over to your blog for a dose of fun. For me, it's a perfect marriage and has helped me lose 5 of my 30 lb goal.
You both ROCK in an oddly balanced way.
ooooh pick me!!!
I love sparkpeople! They are wonderful! What a good book to have to help with weight loss goals! I just found your site and hope I win!!
How could you not want a book by spark people?
I'm a Sparkie too! I agree, it is a great tool, encouraging small steps, and really is flexible in helping to define a right path for each person. And it's free!! As others have said, pick me, pickme!!
I lost over 70 lbs. with the help of Sparkpeople. (Of course, now I'm using them to lose the 10 - fine! 14 - I gained back.) It's a terrific web site and I'd love to win the book.
I'd love to win this book!
Wow, great blog. And thanks for the chance to win such a great book. I wonder... would the non-winners be able to purchase the book at some point?
Thanks again.
I love sparkpeople! Can't wait to read the book!
I want this book! Anything to help me re-lose the weight I've gained after falling off the fitness/healthy eating wagon. GAH!
I am not on sparkpeople. I am not a sparkperson. I do, however, have a bluehead like the one in the photo.
I started my weightloss with Sparkpeople. My doctor recommended it. Can't wait to read the book!
I would love a copy of this book, and also a personal coach to come make me follow it.
I love SparkPeople, but new books are not in my budget right now. Hope I win a copy!
I could use some Spark, count me in!
I'm interested in this book. Hope to win a copy.
Great website - very colorful and informative. I'd love the to win the book.
I have actually never looked into spark people before, even though I've seen it on a few other blogs - so I'd love to check out this book!
Maybe winning a copy of this book will help motivate me in the new year ;)
This book looks like it is just the thing to help me spark me getting rid of some of my weight. I know that I have to do the work but it always helps to have someone or something behind you.
I signed up with them a while ago just to do a little experiment with tracking my food intake. I love how much info is on that site...very useful. I think their book would likely be pretty good too....got my fingers crossed.
I,too, signed up with Sparkpeople after seeing their book offered on Amazon, so I'd love to win a copy of it. Count me in. Thanks.
Okay, I'm going to have to finally get my poop together and go visit SparkPeople. Everybody tells me I should, and I've been really bummed lately that my incredibly successful weight loss e-community from forever ago when I successfully lost weight is no more.
In the meantime, the book would be a cool place to start...
OK, I need to know the 27 proven secrets of success!!!! I Love reading fitness stuff so I hope to win! Thx for this giveaway!
I heard about SparkPeople and will check out their site. I would love the book to help me get up to speed with their ideas and support.
I've been on Sparkpeople for a couple of years now and heard about this blog through the Daily Spark blog. And I'm glad I did! This blog is much more my style and always makes me laugh.
wow... sounds great! I've lost about 70 lbs so far and the last 25 haven't been as cooperative! I could totally use a "spark"... lol
Secrets to health, I'm skeptical.

Oh oh Sparkpeople is awesome! I would so love to have the book!
I want to say something cynical and witty here, but the truth is that SparkPeople is a good and useful website.
Sparkpeople is awesome and I would love love love to have this book. :)
sparkpeople is even perkier than they implied. great idea but when they auto-enrolled me in some local group, it was too much perkiness for me.
but i'd still like to check out the book. i need to drop a mere 100lbs and start that without exercising - because the main problem is knees that don't want to work anymore. Gotta lose weight to get the knees to work; need the knees to work in order to lose weight.
This sounds great! I am in need of motivation with a heavy dose of optimism.
I've lost almost 75 pounds using the Spark People food tracker. Two friends have already asked to borrow my book when it arrives so I really need a loaner copy so I can write all over mine without worrying about having to loan it out with all my secret comments.
PS Since I'm sarcastic crabby myself I have to limit SP time to when I'm in the mood to play nice with others....
I have been on their site for going on two years. I use it in addition to Weight Watchers.
Hope I get a chance to win~I haven't had a chance to pick up the book, but I'm so excited to get my hands on it. I am sure it is full of very useful information, just like their site.
By the way...I love reading Cranky Fitness Blog!
Yes, throw me in the hat...maybe 2010 will be my really lucky year!
I never heard of them before, but I'm off to go lose a couple of hours looking through the site. Sign me up for the book. :)
I am ready for my outsides to sparkle like my insides do!
Sounds like a good inspirational book. I appreciate any read that will keep me motivated!
I've been on sparkpeople for a while now. I think it's great
I would love a copy of the book.
Never been to Cranky Fitness before. Really enjoying reading your posts. But sitting online isn't helping me reach my fitness goals much.
I love their site, and post my food diary on there faithfully. That has been a great help for my weightloss.
I just found this blog and added it to my reader and I will be heading over to Sparkpeople. What a great way to start the new year!
Found your Cranky website! Can't believe you look like my mom, Fritzi (40 years ago)... wonderful stuff on your site! If I could only write like you, pizzazz.

I have got to get a passport, cross the border and open up a post office box. I feel so excluded!
I love their website...they are out to save the world :) I'd love a copy of their book - just discovered your site and have you in my newly discovered google reader :) Happy Day to you :)
I have been on Spark since July 31, 2009. I have lost 20 pounds and I am in the best shape of my life. Feelin' Fit, Fab and Fifty something!
I've been on Spark for five years +. In addition to the nutrition and exercise stuff, there are specialty blogs inside that address things that make losing weight hard to do - like diabetes, heart conditions, pregnancy, thyroid problems, and Depression. Emotional problems are probably the biggest cause of weight gain in the United States.
-LEEDADLL- Spark even has a Large number of suggestions for losing weight for people who can't walk, have bad knees, etc.
I Love Sparkpeople! I just spent some time at a bookstore looking at the book. The pictures of successful members in the center of the book are amazing.
